Edge connector

Software running at the plant that reads the equipment over the plant's own network and sends the data out, since the controllers themselves are never exposed to the internet.

How it works

An edge connector runs on an industrial computer or virtual machine inside the plant network, usually beside the SCADA server. It polls inverters, meters, weather stations and the SCADA system itself over Modbus, OPC UA or other protocols. It maps each raw value to a named, scaled measurement with a unit and timestamp. Then it buffers the data and sends it out over an encrypted connection that it opens itself.

This design keeps the plant's control network closed. The connector makes only outbound connections, often through a firewall and a separate network zone, so nothing outside can reach the equipment directly. If the internet link drops, it stores data locally and forwards it when the link returns, leaving no gaps. Some connectors also pass commands, such as a curtailment setpoint, but only through narrow paths the plant owner approves. Software updates and configuration changes are usually managed remotely.

Why it matters

Plant data is only useful if it arrives complete and safely. A connector that misses an hour during an outage leaves a hole in availability and performance records. A connector that opens an inbound port creates a security risk that lenders, insurers and grid operators will question. For an owner adding plants to a portfolio, a standard connector makes each new site quicker to bring online.

A worked example

A plant produces 3,000 values a second. Averaged to one-minute values, that is 3,000 × 1,440 = 4.32 million records a day. At about 50 bytes per record, the daily volume is 4.32 million × 50 = 216 MB before compression. If the link goes down for 18 hours, the connector must hold 216 × 18 ÷ 24 = 162 MB locally. A 64 GB local disk could buffer about 64,000 ÷ 216 = 296 days of data.
